Biography
Andrew Back received
the B.Eng (with distinction) in 1985, and after a period with
industry, received the PhD degree from the University of
Queensland in 1992. He was a Research Fellow with the Defence
Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) from 1988 to 1992,
and a Research Scientist with the DSTO in 1993. Dr. Back was
awarded an Australian Research Council (ARC) Postdoctoral
Research Fellowship in the Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering at the University of Queensland for the period from
1993-1996. In 1995 he was a Visiting Scientist at the NEC
Research Institute, Princeton, NJ. He was an invited Frontier
Researcher with the Brain Information Processing Group at the
Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN Brain Science
Institute) in Japan from 1996 to 1999. In 1999 he joined a
private company developing models used in the wholesale trading
of electricity. More recently, Dr. Back founded
a mathematical software company Windale Technologies,
which develops components for maths, science, engineering, and finance.
He has organized workshops for the Neural
Information Processing Systems Conference in 1994, 1995 and 1996
in the area of neural networks and signal processing including
the recent area of independent component analysis. Dr. Back maintains an active involvement
in research. His research interests include the development and analysis of
nonlinear models with particular application to biomedical
signals and financial markets. Most recently he been working on the problem of input
variable selection.
