Biography
Andrew Back received the B.Eng (with Distinction) in 1985, and after a period with industry,
received the PhD degree from the University of Queensland in 1992. He was a Research Fellow
with the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) from 1988 to 1992,
and a Research Scientist with the DSTO in 1993. He was awarded an Australian Research Council (ARC)
Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at
the University of Queensland from 1993-1996. In 1995 he was a Visiting Scientist at
the NEC Research Institute, Princeton, NJ. From 1996 to 1999 he was an invited
Frontier Researcher at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, Saitama, Japan.
In 1999 he joined a private company developing pricing models for the wholesale trading of electricity.
In 2001 he founded a continuing private software company which provides quantitative financial software
to various international banks and trading companies.
From 2017-present he has been with The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.
His current research interests include machine learning, entropy based AI, probabilistic information theoretic models
and fast algorithms for analysis and prediction in real world systems such as natural language, robotics, autonomous systems and human motion.
