Andrew Back received the B.Eng (with distinction) in 1985, and after a period with industry, received the PhD degree from the University of Queensland in 1992. He was a Research Fellow with the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) from 1988 to 1992, and a Research Scientist with the DSTO in 1993. Dr. Back was awarded an Australian Research Council (ARC) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Queensland for the period from 1993-1996. In 1995 he was a Visiting Scientist at the NEC Research Institute, Princeton, NJ. He was an invited Frontier Researcher with the Brain Information Processing Group at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN Brain Science Institute) in Japan from 1996 to 1999. In 1999 he joined a private company developing models used in the wholesale trading of electricity. More recently, Dr. Back founded a mathematical software company Windale Technologies, which develops components for maths, science, engineering, and finance. He has organized workshops for the Neural Information Processing Systems Conference in 1994, 1995 and 1996 in the area of neural networks and signal processing including the recent area of independent component analysis. Dr. Back maintains an active involvement in research. His research interests include the development and analysis of nonlinear models with particular application to biomedical signals and financial markets. Most recently he been working on the problem of input variable selection.
